What Damages Latex That Most People Don't Think About

There's a version of latex care advice that gets passed around endlessly. Keep it out of the sun. Don't snag it. Rinse after wearing. It's not wrong, exactly — it's just incomplete in a way that costs people pieces they genuinely loved.

The damage that shows up after six months, the dull patch that won't polish out, the tiny split along a seam that wasn't there before — that rarely comes from the obvious stuff. It comes from the things nobody thought to mention.

The zip you didn't notice

Copper and brass are latex's quiet enemies. Most people know that oils degrade latex over time, but metal oxidation is less discussed — and more insidious. A brass zip on a jacket hung next to your latex, a copper-toned buckle resting against a sleeve in a drawer: the oxidation transfers. It doesn't happen overnight. It happens slowly, in a small patch, and by the time you notice the discolouration it's already set into the surface.

If you're storing latex near other garments — even loosely — check what hardware those pieces carry. It's a small thing. It matters more than most people expect.

Rings, watches, and the things you're wearing while you dress

This one sounds obvious until you realise how rarely anyone actually thinks about it in the moment. A ring with a setting, a watch with a textured clasp, even a bracelet with a slightly rough edge — all of it drags across the latex surface as you pull a garment on. At 0.30mm, that surface is doing a lot of work to stay intact. At 0.45mm there's more resilience, but the risk doesn't disappear.

The damage is usually a fine scratch rather than a tear. Fine scratches don't catch the light the way a polished surface does. Over time, a piece that should have a clean, high-contrast finish starts to look slightly matte in patches — not intentionally, not evenly. Just worn.

Take the jewellery off first. Every time.

The wrong kind of dark

Storing latex away from light is correct. Storing it in a black bin bag, or any non-breathable plastic, is not. The issue isn't darkness — it's trapped humidity and the off-gassing from certain plastics, which interact with the latex surface over months of contact.

The result is a kind of surface tackiness that doesn't respond to silicone polish the way fresh latex does. In some cases it causes pieces to partially bond to themselves if they've been folded rather than hung.

Latex stores best hung, in a breathable cotton garment bag, away from direct light. Not sealed. Not compressed. Not touching other latex without a layer of silicone between them.

Heat you didn't think of as heat

Direct sunlight is the obvious one. Less obvious: the boot of a car in July, a radiator in the next room, a tumble dryer running nearby. Latex doesn't need to be in contact with a heat source to be affected by ambient warmth over time — it needs sustained exposure, and "sustained" can mean an afternoon in the wrong room.

At elevated temperatures, the material begins to lose elasticity at a molecular level. It doesn't snap back the same way. A garment that fit precisely — that worked with the body rather than against it — starts to feel slightly looser, slightly less responsive. The fit doesn't fail dramatically. It just quietly stops being what it was.

The silicone you skipped

Silicone polish isn't just for shine. It's a surface protectant. Latex that's worn without a light application of silicone is more vulnerable to friction damage, surface oxidation, and the micro-abrasions that accumulate with normal wear. The polish fills in the surface at a microscopic level and creates a barrier.

Skipping it once isn't catastrophic. Skipping it consistently, over months of wear, is how a piece that should last years starts to look tired by the end of the first.

A note on thickness

Not all of this applies equally across the range. A piece cut at 0.45mm — the heavier end of what we work with at Form Latex — carries more structural resilience than something at 0.30mm. But resilience isn't immunity. The same rules apply; the margin for error is just slightly wider.

If you're new to latex, or if a piece is going to see regular wear, the heavier thickness is worth considering — not because the thinner gauge is fragile, but because the extra weight gives you more room to learn the material before the material starts to show it.
