I made a poor call on latex thickness the very first time I ordered.
I went for 0.4mm, because on paper it sounded ideal — neither paper-thin nor uncomfortably weighty. I poured over listings, studied reference photos, and fooled myself into thinking I grasped how thickness altered how latex wears. I really didn't, though. That only clicked when I tested both weights on the same afternoon, in an identical design, out in London's indecisive spring-autumn weather.
0.4mm latex
The best way I can describe it: it moves alongside your body. Grab a well-made garment, and it slides on smoothly, no snags or tight resistance along the seams. It hugs your skin almost immediately. You see brands bang on about a second-skin fit constantly, and it's easy to dismiss as sales talk until you experience it. It isn't fragile. It's simply reactive. Every small movement, every breath, the latex moves with you.
For all-day wear, 0.4mm is my go-to. It doesn't wear you down. After an hour or two, you hardly notice you have it on. Whether you see that as top-tier praise or a strange observation about latex is up to you.
Then there's 0.6mm
It's noticeably heavier from the second you pull it on. It has rigidity the lighter gauge lacks — a solid presence. Instead of conforming fully to your shape, it holds its own form. Visually, the effect is far more sculptural. If 0.4mm melts close to your frame, 0.6mm stands out.
I hesitated twice before committing to a 0.6mm piece. My main fear was that it would feel tight and limiting. That fear proved unfounded, so long as the pattern is tailored correctly — a given with fully bespoke latex. Wearing it feels intentional. Like the clothing has a point of view.
So which weight works best?
It all hinges on what you need the piece for.
Pick 0.4mm if mobility and lasting comfort are priorities. That second-skin fit photographs wonderfully, and it holds up reliably through a full night out.
Choose 0.6mm when silhouette is just as vital as comfort. It maintains its structure through lengthy shoots or long evenings; it won't slacken as time goes on.

Stuck deciding? Most buyers land on 0.4mm and never regret it. If you're after a defined, substantial silhouette, go heavier.
